Welcome to the May edition of the Bradworthy Newsletter.
This month there is more to report than space so I apologise in advance for any omissions. However, thank you to all the contributors.
Community Stall
The Community Stall has been in the Village for some years now. Over time it has built up a loyal following of customers and vendor contributors. The stall regularly sells home made cakes, garden produce, books, household effects and children's clothes. They will sell almost anything on behalf of anyone and only retain 10% of the sale price to cover costs and fund local projects. Last year the stall raised £150.00 for the Pre-School group. The stall is open from 9.00am until 12.00 noon every Saturday through the summer months. Helpers would be most welcome. Please contact Margaret Horn (241259) or Paul Batten (241488) for more details.
The Over 60's Club
The Over 60's Club had a most successful shopping trip to Taunton last month. On Thursday 6th May they are going by coach to Boscastle and Padstow for a day out. The coach is almost full but they are always pleased to hear from anyone interested in joining. 'Phone Angela Yeo at 241721.
Wednesday Club
Mrs Eve Wonnacott reported to the Annual Meeting that the Wednesday Club is now in its fifteenth year and membership stands at 16. The Club was started by Social Services to enable elderly or lonely people to get out more.
The Club is staffed by a dedicated group of volunteers who hold a lunch meeting every Wednesday in the Methodist Sunday School Room.
The Club uses funds contributed by the Parish Council to take the members on coach outings.
Wine and wisdom
The Carnival wine and wisdom was won by the WI based team:
- Maureen Balsdon (capt)
- Beryl Lane
- Mandy Vanstone
- Gill Couch
- Shirley-Ann Andrews
- Roger Andrews (Ms)
Congratulations to them. Many thanks to all who attended and to Jonathan Barker for a good quiz.
WI
At the last WI meeting Ms Mandy Wright spoke about her experiences in the Police Service. Mandy moved to the village a year or so ago and gave the members a fascinating insight into life as a policewoman.
The next meeting is 4th May. At the June 2nd meeting there will be a talk 'Flower arranging - back to basics', given by Sarah Huxtable. More details 241962 or 241916.
Bradworthy Twinning
The Bradworthy Twinning exchange trip to France will be going on 29th May, returning 31st May. Places still available, 'phone Shaun Heard at 241537.
Parish Council News
The Parish Council met in the Methodist Sunday School Room on April 30th.
Many thanks indeed to Parish Clerk, Paul Clarke for kindly sending the minutes of the meeting in time for this publication. Editor
Prior to the regular Council meeting, the Annual Meeting for Bradworthy was held.
Cllr Trevor Sillifant reported on: Langdon Charity: The funds stand at £1400.00 and an improved rate of interest has been negotiated. Neighbourhood Watch: The scheme is being re-organised and it is expected that the local constabulary will be meeting parishioners later in the year to explain and discuss various matters. Anyone willing to assist should contact Mr Sillifant.
Mrs Sandra Hayes sent a concise written report on the Pre-School indicating a successful year of fund raising over £1300.00. This was put towards a computer, photocopier, digital camera, play and other equipment. The Children had taken part in a variety of activities both in school and away. There are 29 children on the register.
Mrs Carol Dunn submitted an encouraging report on the Playing Field Committee. Progress is being made on the renewal of equipment with a grant of £5000.00 from Awards for All. Donations were made from proceeds of sales of the Bradworthy Book and fundraising organised by the Bradworthy Inn. £7300.00 is in hand for the next phase.
Mr Dave Foster has e-mailed the Newsletter to draw attention to the fact that someone destroyed safety signs and a temporary barricade erected whilst the Climbing Frame was under repair.
At the meeting Mrs Angela Yeo raised the issue of vandalism generally around the village, particularly the destruction of a fountain in the Millennium Garden.
It was reported that the Parish Plan was on public display on 3rd April. Anyone who is unclear about any of the proposals should approach the Council with their queries.
The detailed planning application has not yet been submitted for the wind farm. Following the Inspector's report, details of the proposed Community Trust Fund have not yet been worked out.
Following a spate of vandalism in the square, the Council proposes to fit gates to the bus shelter. As a result of certain observations, it was decided to defer this decision for six months.
The Council proposes a locally made seat to commemorate Tom Cann. Contributions still welcome.
St John the Baptist Parish Church
At the Annual Bradworthy Meeting, Church Warden Richard Boughton reported: Over the last two years nearly forty members of the congregation have either passed away or moved out of the area. However, with the addition of new members, the congregation is in good heart.
Over the past year there were a good number of Christenings and Weddings (but not always in that order). The Christmas services were particularly well attended.
The new Makin Westmorland 20 Organ has now been installed and is a great benefit to worship.
Methodist Chapel
The local minister, Ms Christine Legge is about to become fully ordained.
There will be special services on Sunday 9th May at 11.00 and Monday 10th at 7.00pm to celebrate the anniversary of the Sunday School.

School Trip - Oliver Boughton
On 2nd April a group of year 11 students from Holsworthy Community College, as part of their travel and tourism course, went to Alton Towers for the day; and a whole day it nearly was too!
I was out of bed by 3.30am to leave Holsworthy by 4.30am. On the way we had two stops and at 8.15 I thought it was more like 10.00 because I was not used to the early morning. We arrived at about 10.30 and in the next seven and a half hours went on as many rides as we dared to. I went on more than I thought I could go on because I had never been to a theme park like Alton Towers before. We got back to Holsworthy at 11.50pm and I got back to Bradworthy at 12.30 after being awake for 21 hours. As you can imagine I was not best pleased to get up at 7.00am next day.
