Welcome to the July edition of the Bradworthy Newsletter.
It is not really local news but I have been working on a barn conversion project for a farmer in Sutcombe. I was interested when he recently replaced all his sheep with ones that moult rather than grow a fleece. It never occurred to me that such a sheep existed and, in my naivety, I assumed that farmers keep sheep to produce lamb for human consumption and to produce wool. Not so, apparently; yes, sheep produce lamb but, to many farmers, the wool is a waste product as there is no real market for it.
With that in mind, how pleased I was to read, in a building magazine, of an insulation product made of 100% waste British wool. The product has obvious advantages to anyone who has ever handled glass fibre insulation and is considerably less energy consuming to produce. I can't wait for a suitable opportunity to use it!!
Please send items for August to newsletter@bradworthy.co.uk, or 'phone/fax 241147.
Ms Tricia Salisbury has e-mailed the Newsletter asking if someone would be able to look after her mother's grave in the cemetery. If you could help please 'phone 01409 241147 and I will put you in touch.
Thank-you, Editor

Pre-School
The Pre-School group would like to thank all those who attended the most successful Dance on Saturday 19th June. It was very well attended with special thanks to the bar staff and the Whiskey Thieves Band.
The event raised over £600.00 that will be spent on ride-on toys and bicycles.
The group organised catering in the Social Club for the four nights that England played in the Euro2004 football, raising a profit of £200.00. This service was much appreciated by the football fans and the club.

Parish Council News
The Parish Council met on Friday June 25th in the Methodist Sunday School Room.
Waste Recycling
A Green Box & Bag kerbside collection is starting in rural parts of the parish.
Litter Bins
Torridge District Council has decided on the locations around the edges of the village for four dog waste bins, which are expected to be erected soon. An ordinary litterbin has been requested for the Square to replace the one that was removed when the square was resurfaced.
Play Area
The fence between Tuckers and the play area is being re-instated.
Roads
Several signpost arms are missing either as a result of vandalism or as an unconfirmed result of Devon County Council road use policy.
The lack of adequate signs is causing confusion especially for tourists.
Some blocked drains have been cleared.
Footpaths
The County Council, in partnership with the Parish Council, is arranging for footbridges to be erected between Bradworthy Common & Heath Farm and at Spittle.
Planning
The Council raised no objections to applications for a barn conversion to a holiday unit at Waterland Farm nor to the re-submission for a new dwelling in North Road nor to a new gateway at Mill View, Mill Road.
The Bradworthy Parish Plan
Following the last parish consultation questionnaire, the plan is nearing proof stage. When finalised it will be available to parishioners for study. To see the last Village appraisal, visit the only currently active Village information Website at www.appraisal.bradworthy.co.uk.
Bradworthy Wind Farm
The Council is aware that Dr Amanda Harry is conducting a survey about the quality of life for those living in the vicinity of the site at Stowford Cross. The more responses Dr Harry receives the more comprehensive will be her conclusions.
The Newsletter is grateful to those on the Parish Council who e-mailed the late news that Ms Jane Addy has resigned as a Parish Councillor. No doubt the Council and Ms Addy will formally comment in due course but the Newsletter understands that Ms Addy has resigned to focus on her voluntary work. Hopefully she will now have time to contribute articles to the Newsletter.
Social Club
On Friday 25th June the Social Club held its AGM. The Chairman and Treasurer were re-elected and the new Secretary, Anita Seymour-Smith, elected.
The Chairman thanked Malcolm & Sheila Wright and all the bar staff for their successful year's work.
Methodist Chapel
Sunday Services for July, 11.00am
| 4th | Mr R Uglow |
| 11th | Prof. Michael Winter, Chapel Anniversary |
| 18th | Rev. Christine Legge |
| 25th | Mrs Barbara Simpson |
Despite his academic title, Prof. Michael of Hatherleigh, is a very down to earth practical preacher. We so enjoyed his visit to us last year for our Harvest Thanksgiving that we invited him again to lead our Chapel Anniversary Service on 11th July. Why not come and join us?
A Church Army What??
Since you have had a Church Army evangelist living in Bradworthy for a year now, I thought it was about time I told you what I was doing here!
Well, I work for the Church of England but I am not a vicar. Instead I seek to connect with people outside the Church and share with them the good news of Christianity. This sometimes involves speaking, but mostly involves trying to help people in whatever their circumstances and by helping them, showing them that God cares about them too.
My job description falls into roughly 4 parts: Working with the farming community, helping the churches of the deanery be more relevant to their communities, working with young offenders at CFAR at Highampton and lastly to help church members throughout the Barnstaple to Oakhampton area in their mission and evangelism. I also play skittles!
I love a good argument so if anyone out there wants to discuss Christianity or Church or anything else with me - feel free.

BRAD Group
Bradworthy Recreational Activity Development Group has been established as a registered UK charity and has received a Community Start-up Fund grant from LEADER+, a body based in Bideford allocating funding in this area. This grant has been match funded by Bradworthy Parish Council, Torridge District Council and the Local Agenda 21 Group.
The initial aim of the BRAD group is to work with the Market and Coastal Towns Initiative and Torridge District Council to complete a feasibility study to decide how the shortfalls in space for organised recreation and limited sports facilities may be resolved.
The intention then is to carry through the construction of a sporting infrastructure that will be inclusive, allow the pursuit of excellence by those who excel and participation by those that wish to.
It is hoped to generate two football pitches, a cricket square, an all weather training area and astro-turf pitch, an indoor training area and a new changing room complex combined with social areas.
The buildings will be ecologically designed and will also be used to generate electricity, thus reducing running costs and contributing to the sustainable development of the area.
