August 2004

Welcome to the August edition of the Bradworthy Newsletter.

The Newsletter is late this month as my schedule for writing it up was upset by a collapsed drainpipe. The pipe in question became blocked on Saturday afternoon and, as this is a busy time of year with holiday visitors, it required immediate attention. At 7.00pm Robbie King, Pete Milman and I set about hand digging up a run of pipework to relieve the blockage. We had family down, for my Birthday, who spent the evening on deckchairs watching us.

The subsequent repair next day delayed the Newsletter for which I apologise. Many thanks for their help to Robbie and Pete.

The Newsletter is now on the Internet. As a result I received a copy of a newspaper article on the plight of sheep farmers, following last month's editorial comment on wool waste insulation, from an e-reader in London. Also, following Mandy Wright's article last month, I received an interesting e-mail from Ms Elizabeth Howard about Bradworthy Bible Christians. I am passing that onto the Bradworthy Bygones and intend to publish it in a future Newsletter.

Please send items for September to newsletter@bradworthy.co.uk or 'phone/fax 241147.

Bradworthy YFC'S cry for help!

In 1934 Bradworthy Calving Club became an affiliated club of the Devon Federation of Young Farmers. It began with 55 members, making it the largest in Devon. The club is still going strong today with 71 members.

This year, Bradworthy YFC are celebrating their 70th Anniversary. Current members have decided to organise a formal 3-course meal, followed by a dance to honour the year. The evening, to be held on Saturday 16th October at Bradworthy Memorial Hall, will also include a reception drink, formal speeches, displays of YFC memorabilia from the past 70 years, and of course the chance for old friends to meet up. Tickets will cost £15 and any profits will be given to charity.

The club, however, needs a little help from you, the readers!

We are in search of past Bradworthy YFC members, stretching right back to 1934 when the club was first formed. We would like to find the oldest Bradworthy YFC Chairman and member. If you think you may be, or may know of, that person, please get in touch. Also, If you have been a member of Bradworthy YFC and would like to help celebrate the clubs' achievements, please get in touch to reserve your ticket.

The Club would really appreciate any photographs, certificates, badges, newspaper clippings, sweatshirts, etc, with which we can build up a display.

To contact the club about any of the above please 'phone Sarah on 01409 241382 or 07790813414.

Bradworthy Pre-School

At the end of a very busy year the pre-school would like to thank everyone for their continued support. Particularly Jo & Tom James for providing Dunstaple Farm ice cream at the sports day and to Patsy for providing our leavers with a special treat from the Pantry Tea Shop.

Parish Council News

The Parish Council met on Friday July 30th in the Methodist Sunday School Room.

Vacancy on the Council

Following the resignation of Jane Addy, James Dayman was co-opted.

Bradworthy Parish Plan

The Council was questioned by a parishioner about the content of the plan which is about to be published. It was explained that it was prepared to a format acceptable to the Countryside Agency to maximise funding and the plan included a “wish list” and on-going projects which will take several years to complete. Some ideas may not come to fruition.

Dog Litter Bins

Torridge District Council has fixed three bins on the outskirts of the village. The location of the fourth one in Mill Road will be changed due to an objection to the originally agreed site.

Traffic Control

The Council intends to ask for a 20mph speed limit in the vicinity of the school in Mill Road and will also suggest the existing overall 30mph village limit be lowered.

Bradworthy Wind Farm

It is understood that there has been an independent 'Wind Assessment' made and Torridge District Council may also carry out similar tests.

Holsworthy District Council Office

The Council supports efforts to retain this facility. The suggested alternative arrangements to serve about 26 local parishes are not satisfactory.

St Peter's Well

The Council was concerned to learn concrete waste or something similar had been dumped in the well.

Roadside Verges and Hedges

There is adverse comment from Bradworthy and other areas about the way the County Council has done the cutting this season. Lengths of hedge have been cut very hard in places where visability is not a problem and left uncut where overgrowth obstructs the view.

Bradworthy Bygones

The Bygones group will meet in the Cecil Collacott Room of the Memorial Hall on Wednesday 11th and 25th, 2.00-4.00pm All Welcome
