September 2004

Welcome to the September edition of the Bradworthy Newsletter.

When I started The Newsletter I was advised to combine August and September into a summer edition on the basis that there is nothing going on in August and no-one around to read it anyway. In the event the August Bank Holiday was very busy with three most successful days of activities. All three were well attended and enjoyed. Many thanks to the organisers and all that helped make the events happen.

Over the months it has been mentioned that it would be handy if there was a location for dropping off written contributions to the Newsletter. As my wife is Treasurer of the Social Club messages left over the bar counter will reach us fairly quickly. Please do write in with reports of your activities or to publicise future events.

Please send items for October to newsletter@bradworthy.co.uk or 'phone/fax 241147.

Planning

Richard and Kelly Hudson would like to thank all those who supported their recent planning application for a development in North Road.

They are pleased to announce that the application has been successful.

Fayre

On Bank Holiday Monday the Fayre Committee organised a fun day in the Square in conjunction with the traditional Bradworthy Inn Beer Festival.

Although only a few contestants entered the Strongest Man event this year over £300.00 was raised to be divided between local charitable groups. The RNLI stall raised over £100.00 for the Lifeboats.

Jamie Clarke was the strongest under 30 and Steve Chiel the strongest over 30.

After the Dog Show on Sunday, Pete Milman organised a Tug of War. Of course the team of strong young men won it but the ladies took the prize for having the most team members and a coach.

Richard Welham organised a Welly throwing contest that John Crowley won by catching one in his eye.

Bradworthy Carnival Week

21st – 28th August

The week began with a Wine & Wisdom evening in the Memorial Hall on Saturday 21st August. Twenty-two teams entered an enjoyable quiz that was won by Dave Underhill's team. Dave, who brings his team out to Bradworthy from Bideford, is a regular entrant for the Wine & Wisdom events. Congratulations and thank you to him and very many thanks to Mr Jonathan Barker for compiling and hosting the Quiz.

On Wednesday evening Mr Raymond Furse organised a Skittles Tournament. Thirteen teams entered for a very enjoyable evening that was eventually won by the Carnival Chairman's team. Players:- Nigel Balsdon, Anita Seymour-Smith, Hayley and Richard Neil, Chas Balsdon and Malcolm Buckingham. Congratulations to them and, as they were playing to win, it is no surprise that the Carnival Secretary took so much trouble choosing the winner's trophies this year(!!)

The Carnival Committee would like to thank all that attended the evenings and made them both such successes. They would also like to thank all those who set up the Hall on both evenings and cleared up afterwards.

The entries for the Carnival itself were exceptional this year, the winners being:-
