October 2004

Welcome to the October edition of the Bradworthy Newsletter.

Windmills

There was an article in the September 9th edition of the North Devon Journal saying that work on the wind turbines is due to start at the beginning of October. It goes on to discuss the Community Trust set up, as a condition of the planning appeal Inspector's decision, to benefit the people of Bradworthy.

I see, from the Parish Council notes this month, that the Parish Plan is now ready to be printed and distributed. It will be interesting to read how the Parish Council intend to use this money.

Articles

There has been a tremendous contribution to this month's Newsletter, in part as a result of contributors handing articles in over the Social Club bar. Many thanks to Malcolm and his staff for their help in this way.

Please, therefore, hand articles in at the Social Club or send items for November by e-mail to newsletter@bradworthy.co.uk or 'phone/fax 241147.

Thank you, Editor

Parish Council News

The Parish Council met on Friday September 24th in the Methodist Sunday School Room.

Bradworthy Parish Plan

The Chairman, Cllr. Bill Jarvis showed Councillors a copy of the plan, which is about to be printed and then distributed.

Parish Lengthsman

The County Council has indicated that a gang will be working in the parish on 8th, 9th and 10th November. They will return on 13th, 14th and 15th December. Any items needing attention should be notified to Cllr. Mrs Sheila Wright.

District and Parish Matched Grants

Torridge District Council will no longer match these grants. The Parish Council has yet to decide the sum available for future grants. Meanwhile local organisations wishing to apply should make an application as soon as possible and by mid November at the latest.

War Memorial

Despite searches and police involvement, the missing chains have not been recovered. Although replacements should be covered by insurance, the cost to the ratepayers by way of basic excess payment is considerable. If anyone is aware of the location of these chains please contact the Parish Clerk or the Newsletter or the Neighbourhood Watch scheme in the strictest confidence.

A Parishioner, who signs himself A Fed up Dog poo dodger of Bradworthy but who has supplied his name to the Newsletter has asked the following to be included this month.

Dog's Mess

I am starting to get a little bit angry and fed up with the problem of dogs fouling the pavements outside my house and other parts of the Village.

On several occasions I have had to clear dogs mess from outside my gate so that I can get my two small children out of the gate and to school without them treading in it. It is not only outside my house but all over the village; especially lower village and the Churchyard. I am not sure whether it is dog owners walking their dogs and not bothering to pick it up, or the few dogs that are left to roam around the village on their own by their owners as I have not yet been able to find out the culprits. I am not the only one that finds this a problem; a number of people I have spoken to are just as fed up as I am. It is hard enough getting children to school, crossing roads, avoiding traffic, without having to spend the whole walk to school dodging dogs mess.

I am not having a go at all dog owners, (I am one myself) as there are a few dog walkers who do carry bags and clear up after their dogs so if these people can, why can't everyone?

A plea to all dog owners please be considerate to others and do not turn this great village into a huge great big doggy loo.

Cattle event

On 29th September the South West Beef and Growing Cattle event was held at Hatherleigh. Over 3,000 visitors came with 1,000 Farmers arriving by 10.30 am. There were 114 trade stands, including 14 of the major breed societies and 20 speakers in 5 sessions.

I am glad that Paul Raffe is maintaining the high standard that resulted in his (free) transfer from the Inn Team. We look forward to the local match later in the season.

Nigel Bond

Nigel Bond, again, qualified for the England Clay Pigeon team this year and was also Captain. The team won the home international at Inverness last month and Nigel gave an after dinner speech. Very well done indeed Nigel. It is pleasing that the village can boast two shooters (Flash) of international standard.

Mr Clive Smale, a regular contributor to the Newsletter, has kindly written about his solar energy system. I must admit that I, personally, am most envious, in the most positive way, of Clive's scheme as it points the way to solving our future domestic energy need.

Solar panels

There are grants available, particularly for solar PV systems. The cost effectiveness, linked to renewing our roof, resulted in some accelerated decision-making.

Following various delays, the panels were fitted this spring and we started production at the beginning of May. I suspect that without the help of Eco-Exmoor, we may have given up.

Our system comprises solar photovoltaic panels that convert the sun's energy directly into electricity. We use it as it is being produced. If the system is producing more than we are using the surplus is put into the grid; and if it is producing too little or none at all, we draw on the grid in the usual way. During the 3 months to the beginning of this month we produced a total of about 1000 units of which we had exported 700. With shorter days and longer nights before us, production will go down dramatically.

We have a 3kw system, which means that in the most ideal of conditions in the middle of the day it is capable of producing 3 units of electricity each hour. I have never seen it quite that high and throughout a bright day will vary from perhaps a couple of hundred watts per hour at the beginning and end of the day and varying rates in the middle. They are very sensitive and it's surprising what a passing cloud will do.

Whilst it is not actually paying for itself yet (but watch the energy prices rise in the future!), it does feel good to enjoy the use the 'free' non-polluting energy of the sun.

Do we recommend it? Again the answer is yes, particularly if you need to renew the roof or for new buildings.

Clime Smale, Jubilee House.
