November 2004

Welcome to the November edition of the Bradworthy Newsletter.

This month we are pleased to publish a letter from Mr. Phil Mayhall. Its submission reminded me of a time when the local 'News' was a much more colourful publication than the current one. As we head towards the end of the first year of the 'Newsletter' in its current format, I feel the time is right to ask if anyone would like to take over as Editor. If you would like to be involved, please do contact me.

We would never have been able to launch the 'Newsletter' without the help and support of John Crowley. I cannot thank him enough for his help over the past year.

Please hand articles for December in at the Social Club or send items for inclusion by e-Mail to newsletter@bradworthy.co.uk or 'phone/fax 241147

Thank you, Editor

Parish Council News

The Parish Council met on Friday October 29th in the Methodist Sunday School Room.

Affordable Housing

Mrs Rachel Marshy of Holsworthy MCTi for Action along with Cllr. Des Shadrick discussed with the Council the progress being made in the area to set up housing schemes. Bradworthy is ideally suited for small scale projects. MCTi was hoping to involve Bradworthy in its overall planning for affordable housing. To this end Cllr. Mrs Jo Nancekivell volunteered to be the local representative.

Parish Councillors agreed to form an advisory group to pinpoint the particular needs within the parish.

Parish Council Grants for 2005/06

Local organisations wishing to apply for a grant were again reminded to apply immediately; by mid November at the latest. Applications will be considered at the November meeting.

The Forestmoor Windfarm

There seems to be some confusion as to the situation about the acceptance of funds of £1000.00 per turbine per year. Bradworthy Parish Council was not happy but initially intimated that it would serve on the Community Trust so that the community could benefit. The first suggested aims of the Trust were not acceptable to the Charity Commission. An amended Trust Document is under discussion.

In the meantime a Trust has not been set up and no money has been accepted.

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor

I had presumed that the Council were going to undertake another expensive survey, this time to determine parishioner's views on how to spend the windfarm windfall. So, I was a little surprised to read last month that the Council intend to break with tradition and make their own decision on the matter.

In the absence of a survey I'd like to suggest that the fairest and most democratic way to spend the money would be to distribute it equally amongst those who voted against the project - as a form of compensation for the blight which we are about to receive, may we be truly thankful. However, as 'local democracy' is something that has already been trampled all over, this suggestion is probably a non-starter.

So a more appropriate idea may be to attach small plaques to each of the village signs displaying the names of all the windmill supporters. These plaques need not be too obtrusive, as they wouldn't contain that many names. This idea also has the advantage of being in line with current government 'naming and shaming' guidelines.

Yours truly, Phil Mayhall

Bradworthy Youth Football Club

The Youth Football Club and particularly the Under 12s team, currently playing their first season of 11-a-side football in the North Devon League, would like to say a huge thank you to Roger and Shirley-Ann for their generous sponsorship of a brand new football kit for the full squad of 16 boys. The team played their first match in their new kit away to Bideford Blues on Sunday 3rd October. They looked very smart in their red tops, white shorts and red socks. The tops, which carry a Bradworthy Youth FC badge for the first time, are also emblazoned with the logo Roger Andrews Builders, Bradworthy.

This kind of local support for the football club and other youth organisations in the village is essential; Many thanks.

Neil Nixon

Bradworthy Girls Under 15's Football

This year has seen the formation of a North Devon League for the Girls and Bradworthy has got off to a. brilliant start to the season. They have played five matches and have won them all. The team consists of Roxanne Radmore, Kat Shadrick, Vicky Pett, Louisa Crick, Olivia Sanders, Clare Walter, Danielle Millman, Danni Kilbey, Sadie Harris and Jordane Morris. They each deserve a pat on the back for their commitment and determination in each and every game they have played.

This week's game (Oct 24th) against Barnstable Lionesses was interrupted by a brown and white patchy Jack Russell. Would the owner please make sure the dog is controlled during future matches? Future home fixtures are on 7th and 21st Nov. If you would like to join the team or for more information please 'phone Richard on 241717.

Skittles

Following last month's article about the Backscuttlers, I have been asked to report on the Inn Team. They are playing very consistently with their form.

Bradworthy Playing Fields Committee

The final phase of improvements has now been completed with the installation of two pieces of equipment aimed at children aged 12+.

Earlier in the year a see-saw and springies for the younger children were installed. Rubber matting was installed under the existing roundabout and swings.

The Committee raised £5,000.00 with a big thank you to the Bradworthy Inn for their continued fund raising efforts.
