December 2004

Welcome to the December edition of the Bradworthy Newsletter.

December, being the month of Christmas, sees lots of events in the village. It is also a full year since the Newsletter started. Therefore, it is a good time to thank those who have contributed news items and articles over the year. Thank you also to our advertisers for their support. The Newsletter is to be printed by a different method next year. In anticipation, this month's is produced using different software, another learning curve(!).

Please hand articles for the New Year in at the Social Club or send items for inclusion by email to newsletter@bradworthy.co.uk phone/fax 241147.

Wishing you a very Happy Christmas, thankyou

Remembrance Service

The service at the War Memorial was well attended but was spoilt by the amount of noisy traffic continuing to pass by. Surely a few minutes quiet is not too much to ask in respectful remembrance?

Carol Service

Councillors finalised arrangements for the service on the Sunday before Christmas starting at 6.30pm, round the tree in the square. It is planned to have mince pies and hot drinks afterwards.

The Bus Shelter

Unfortunately, Councillors again reported graffiti and seat damage. It is a shame that a few spoil for the many and the prospect of lockable gates looms - which the Council would prefer to avoid.

The Precept

This year the Council had several unbudgeted items regarding the Village Plan at £200.00; Dog Litter Bins at £ 380.00 and replacement of the stolen War Memorial chains, £100.00. Therefore, The Council decided to recoup this expenditure rather than use reserves, as had been done previously, to cover additional expenditure. The sum agreed was £6000.00, up £700.00

Bradworthy Playing Fields Committee

The Committee would like to respectfully remind everyone that bicycles are not to be ridden in the Playing Fields. It obviously causes a problem by cutting up the grass and making a mud track, and also could create a safety hazard to other users.

Local Skittles Match

The Inn Team recently played away to the Backscuttlers at the Social Club. In the absence of our regular driver, Mr Tony Dilnot drove us from our meeting up point, in the Pub! Our team was somewhat depleted by the absence of our esteemed Captain, and of our star player, Mr Dave Millington. In the tradition of lower league skittles, however, the Backscuttlers agreed to us playing with two substitutes and they also, kindly, kept the game 'friendly'. We were most grateful to Mr Jonathan Barker and PAr Robbie King for playing to a very high standard. By midmatch the scores were level with the Backscuttlers pulling ahead with a couple of good spares towards the end.

By contrast, last week we visited Hartland Legion. We did not play well apart from good performances from our recently returned Captain and, refreshed from his holiday, our driver and star player, Dave. Both sides were a bit surprised by our win that was confirmed by a recount and a Steward's Enquiry afterwards in the Bar!! The Backscuttlers played Putford A, Chris Millman being the top scorer with Paul Raffe and DJ sharing the bottom position.

A very Happy Christmas to all the Skittlers in Bradworthy and, indeed, all the other team players, in fact a Happy Christmas to everyone.

Ken Smyth Inn Team Deputy Vice Captain (Acting)
