January 2005

Welcome to the January edition of the Bradworthy Newsletter.

By contrast to December, there are relatively few events in January but still plenty going on in and around the village. The Newsletter is a bit late this month as bringing it out on the first Saturday of the year was a bit impractical!

I suspect that many of us are glad to be back to normal after the long break. Christmas, traditionally, is a time for contemplation and, with the earthquake disaster, there has been plenty to contemplate this year. Over the break I listened to a very interesting radio programme that demonstrated that the 'consumerist' side of Christmas is certainly nothing new, it goes back hundreds of years. Secondly I watched a news report on the disaster that commented that humans are the only species (that we know of) who try to find a meaning for everything. All other forms of life just have to get on with it!

If you do not want to read my nonsense please hand articles for February in at the Social Club or send items for inclusion by e-mail to newsletter@bradworthy.co.uk or 'phone/fax 241147.

Wishing you a very Happy New Year

Bradworthy Twinning

Just before Christmas the Bradworthy twinners met up to discuss this year's visit. It is scheduled for the weekend of 8th July. The Twinning presents an excellent opportunity for children, in particular, to practice spoken French and, perhaps, set up an e-mail or pen friendship with a French counterpart. New members are always most welcome. If you are interested in joining or just to find out more please contact Roger and Shirlyann on 241135. Or Shaun Heard at 241537.

The Millennium Garden

As there are no Parish Council Notes this month I am grateful to Mrs. Angela Yeo for these notes about the Millennium Garden. The Garden opened on Saturday August 11th 2001. It was the culmination of a great deal of work by a few people. The Garden is located adjacent to 30 Tucker's Park, off North Road, Bradworthy. Since opening many new people have moved into the village who may not know about the Garden. Hopefully these notes will be of interest to them.

The Millennium Garden emerged as the most favoured project when a questionnaire circulated the village for Millennium suggestions.

The Garden is a sustainable, environmentally friendly area, providing a range of natural habitats for flora and fauna in a quiet, undeveloped corner of the village. It is adjacent to the Sheltered Housing. The relatives of Martha Smale and Gerald Bond presented a memorial bench to provide seating while shrubs and plants encourage wildlife.

We hope that you enjoyed the Christmas - New Year holiday. Amidst all the fun and enjoyment Christmas brings, we trust that you had time to ponder on the Christian meaning of Christmas and read the newspaper entitled 'The Son' that accompanied your greeting card from the churches of Bradworthy.

The happenings in the Indian Ocean remind us of how fragile and vulnerable human existence is but also of the warmth and generosity of humankind when they see their 'neighbour' in trouble. There is something of God, something good in each one of us.

Our service on the 16th will be our annual covenant service. This is a time when as individuals and as a Church, we renew our promise to service God and one another. A fitting thing to do at the beginning of a new year.

Have a good 2005 and why not make it the year when you renew or make your acquaintance with God and his Church, be it at the Methodist Church or in the Parish Church.

Cline Smale

The Christmas services were once again very successful this year. The celebrations began with the opening of the Christmas tree festival, and an excellent concert given by the Newton St Petrock male voice choir. This was followed a few days later by the Carol Service. The ever popular Christingle service was held on Christmas Eve. This magical service was attended by nearly 200 people. Later that evening, around 80 people attended midnight mass with preacher Lord Carey. The Christmas Day service was attended by around 40 people, and at this service, Richard Dorrington commented on how enjoyable all the Christmas services had been.

Bradworthy WI Christmas Dinner

The WI had their Christmas party on the first Wednesday in December and as always, everyone had a really good laugh. The 'match the caption to the saucy seaside postcards' certainly caused some giggles and another competition trying to match individual members to their childhood photos proved to be exceptionally difficult? The Christmas spread laid on by the committee was enjoyed by all and the culmination, a raffle put together by Shirleyann with a remarkable lack of good taste, proved to be the highlight of the evening, as it always is..

The programme for 2005 is now available and non-members are welcome to pick up a copy from Maureen Balsdon. The first meeting, which took place on January 5th, featured Bradworthy's own Julia Barker talking about patchwork. Meetings take place in the Sunday School room at 7.30pm. Non-members are very welcome to come just for an evening at £1.50 each.

New Years Day Brunch

Once again the Pre-School parents organised the New Year's Day Brunch this year. The Pub Brunch is a long standing tradition but is, of course, a great deal of work for those who do it. The Pre-School parents always seem to bring a warm style to the event with a welcoming glass of Buck's Fizz and a cheerful 'Happy New Year'. Many thanks to them and to Sally and the Pub for hosting the event.

Moustache Growing Competition

During the Brunch a table was set aside in the bar for entrants to register for the Moustache Growing Competition. This excellent idea was first planned to raise funds for the Air Ambulance. As a result of the earthquake disaster (I cannot spell large wave caused by earthquake, begins with Ts!) the organisers decided to split the proceeds between both funds. There are plenty of participants around the village with spaces on their sponsorship for your contribution. They are easily identified by their unusual facial hair!

Inn Team

The Inn Team played their first return match on the last Monday before Christmas. It was against a nearby village (certainly not Putford) who acted in a most unsporting manner at the beginning of the Season. I am pleased to be able to report that on the return match we beat them convincingly.
