May 2005

Welcome to the May edition of the Bradworthy Newsletter.

Firstly, an apology. Mrs Angela Yeo kindly submitted an article for inclusion in the April edition. Unfortunately it found its way into the Social Club till float bag and was not received by me until after publication. As the Newsletter can only function with input from village organisations, I am very sorry Mrs Yeo's article was not included. She has, however, kindly resubmitted an amended version for inclusion this month.

Following comment last month that 'colourless pages of type are often cast to one side or thrown away unread' the Newsletter is printed on cream coloured paper this month.

I am now able to print the Newsletter myself after several months of photocopying it in the Post Office. I am very grateful to Neil for his support in that and for the help and tolerance of the shop staff.

A first this month was having the same article submitted by two people; one by e-mail and another by post. I am most grateful for any input by whatever means of communication, please!

Please, therefore, hand articles for June in at the Social Club or send items for inclusion by e-mail to newsletter@bradworthy.co.uk or 'phone/fax 241147.

There will be no Sunday School Anniversary Service on the Monday evening this year. It will all take place on the Sunday with an evening service at 6.30 pm following a bring and share tea at 5.30 pm.

The children will be supported during the evening service by the recently formed Worship Group who will arrange the celebratory evening service with a blend of some fairly modern worship songs focusing on the person and work of the Holy Spirit and part of the children's' morning anniversary programme.

It should prove to be a very good evening and we look forward to an enjoyable time together. Please do join us.

Annual parish meeting

Due to the Bank Holiday, I have not received any Parish Council Notes again this month. As the meeting on 29th was the Annual Parish Meeting, I attended the public session.

Editor

The various village organisations that are supported by the Parish Council submitted annual reports in writing or in person.

Councillor Sillifant invited anyone interested in becoming involved with the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme to contact him.

The Pre-School report in particular spoke of a very busy year fund raising in order to provide the level of service that the young village population needs.

From the public seats Mr Tony Dilnot bought to the Council's attention the tremendous effort that has been made by Mrs Teresa Cheel in raising funds for the schools in general via her own efforts and through a scheme run by NatWest Bank Plc.

The Council discussed the progress being made in establishing the trust fund to fulfil the Section 106 agreement put in place by the Appeal Inspector as a condition of the consent for the construction of the Turbines.

It was reported that the developers appeared happy, at this time, to simply pay this money over to the Parish Council without the need for setting up a separate trust. The Parish Clerk advised that the establishment of a trust was in the best interest of the Council.

It was agreed that, before moving forward, the Council would seek legal advice on the developer's current offer of settlement.

In the course of this discussion Councillors asked how the developers had come up with the lump sum figure that they have. The original offer was for the trust to receive £1,000.00 per annum for each turbine for ten years. The Council have decided to take a lump sum offer. As the proposed offer is considerably less than £30,000.00, concern was expressed.

In the public session the issue of the tree felling along Berridon Avenue was discussed. It was reported that quite a few of the trees condemned by the Highways Inspector had, in fact, come down perfectly sound. It is entirely truthful to say that many of the trees, both felled and still standing, would benefit from surgery work but the only way to be sure that the trees are absolutely risk free would be to remove them all altogether. The work was initiated in a less than satisfactory way and appears to be being amended on an ongoing basis, with yet more trees having been recently marked. Councillor Sillifant, recently appointed deputy leader of Torridge District Council, undertook to look into the matter.

In response to a question from the public seats, the Parish Clerk advised that the full minutes of the Parish Council meetings were available for inspection, should anyone be interested, by contacting him. The matter was briefly discussed with the suggestion that perhaps they could be stored in the Cecil Collacott Room being put forward.

Germany and wind turbine noise

I feel I need to clarify a situation. The trip that I took to Germany was not a holiday, unless you call standing amidst Wind Turbines all day, being filmed in freezing weather conditions with ice that is 12 inches thick on lakes and ice flows on a river in Berlin, a holiday. The BBC needed someone who is affected by Turbines and also wanted our local land owners to attend but they refused. So Jamie Mathlin came along.

The German Wind Turbines were silent, a whole field of them viewed from every angle and distance. There was no noise at all.

It was not until February 271, at 10 pm that I realised that the Bradworthy Turbines were using electric power NOT generating it. They were turning furiously round and producing lots of noise. The Turbines were the same at 8am on February the 28th except now the Bradworthy Turbines were turning slowly and silently, the same as the Turbines I visited in Germany. However both in Germany and now in Bradworthy it was freezing. With no wind and no cloud movement I can only assume that both the German and Bradworthy Turbines must all be using electricity. It must be cheaper in Germany to use electricity to keep the components/gearing free and turning rather than use manpower to maintain the Turbines during the freezing conditions.

It has now been 26 days at the time of writing, since all 3 turbines were erected and on only 7 of those days have all three worked intermittently. There is still constant adjustment being carried out.

Jamie Mathlin was good company in Germany intelligent and knowledgeable but I was saddened by his comments on the Radio that we will all grow to love our turbines and more recently in a School magazine report that 'nice' landowners will have Turbines on their land, implying to impressionable 10 and 1 I year olds, that other land owners and people opposing Turbines are not 'nice'.

As it is, other landowners near Bradworthy will not be able to jump on the financial bandwagon as Wind Farm sites should be 5 to 7 kilometres apart, unlike Germany where 81 Turbines surround a small village and people are becoming ill by their effects and losing sleep. East Germany may not be as beautiful as Devon in my eyes but the land is owned by wealthy West Germans and the East Germans only farm it and have no say in the matter of l Wind Farms. But then neither did Bradworthy, the appeal was a Labour Government Decision to appear GREEN. Which these monsters, if they use electricity, are not.

I shall be requesting the exact figures of electricity that is produced by the Forest Moor site and assuming that the company will comply I shall let you know when I have the information. The Forest Moor site may well be a 'very windy place' but is still only just over the speed needed to be commercially viable. To work at full generation these Turbines need a constant of about 33mph. You can access the wind speeds on BBC Ceefax page 402.

It the mean time ask yourself how you would feel if Bradworthy became surrounded by Turbines and everyone in the locality was effected not just a few, because that is what I witnessed in Germany and it was all fuelled by money and greed not Green Energy or Stopping Global Warming.

Bradworthy Under 15's Girls Football team

Bradworthy Under 15's Girls Football team have had a fantastic finish to their first season by winning the Cup in the final held at Barnstaple on Sunday and also coming runners-up in the league.

They did themselves proud and really showed their best abilities by beating Barnstaple Lionesses 4 - 0. We have sometimes struggled to turn out a team, but no matter what, the girls have shown great determination and sportmanship.

Congraulations to Roxanne, Vicki, Jordane, Dani K., Sadie, Kat, Louisa, Olivia, Claire, Dani F., and Dani M.
