August 2005

Welcome to the August edition of the Bradworthy Newsletter.

I have to open this month with a quick apology. Unfortunately some of the first editions of last month's Newsletter had the wrong dates of the Flower Festival. This was soon corrected and I am sorry if anyone was misled by the mistake. There were also questions raised by the gap in the Parish Council News section. As the Council meeting is the last Friday in the month, and the Newsletter tends to come out on the first Saturday of the month, I leave space for the Parish Council news and add it just before printing. Simply, there was very little to print last month! There is far more this month, however.

There is plenty going on this month with the Church Fete on Saturday 6th, the Dog Show on 13th and the Carnival on 27th. On Carnival Day the Bradworthy Inn Beer Festival will be taking place. Once again we hope for good weather for these events and sincerely thank the sponsors of the Newsletter for their generosity towards the Carnival.

Please hand in any articles for inclusion in next month's Newsletter at the Social Club or send items for inclusion by e-mail to newsletter@bradworthy.co.uk or 'phone/fax 241147.

Thank you

Editor

Bradworthy Carnival Sports Day

The Children's Sports Day turned out well on 3rd July. It was a lovely sunny afternoon and the attendance was very good. After the races the Carnival Royalty were crowned and during the afternoon ice creams and cream teas were enjoyed. Two 'Bouncy Castles' were in operation all afternoon that proved to be very popular. Very many thanks to the organisers and helpers for making it a successful day, with special thanks to the Football Club, Pre-School, Brownies, Rainbows, Guides and Toddlers who supported the afternoon by running side shows and attractions.

Beer festival

The Bradworthy Inn Beer Festival will take place over the Bank Holiday weekend of 27th, 28th and 29th. The guest beers will be predominantly of West Country origin, Tee-shirts will be available and the theme of the weekend will be abstinence?

Parishioners and Visitors will have noticed that the damaged seat by the bus shelter has been replaced by Torridge District Council.

Devon in Touch Road Show

Councillors were reminded, as there is no Council meeting at the end of August, that the I T Information Mobile Centre will be in Bradworthy on 7th September when Torridge District Council Officers will also be on board to talk to parishioners and answer questions on District Council services.

Neighbourhood Watch

Mr Barry Taylor of the Area Forum is starting to survey all parishes and plans to be in touch with existing contacts.

Brad Group

The Brad Group have reported that the feasibility study has been in abeyance but is about to restart. Surveyors have been appointed and Solicitors approached. No money has been spent and no firm offers of land have been made.

Social Club

Malcolm Wright, Nigel Balsdon and Richard Radmore have been added to the Social Club Licence having successfully completed the relevant course. Other regular bar staff have attended the course on their own initiative.

Communications

The Parish Council continues to be concerned that matters are being bought to its attention indirectly. If information on a Council matter is required then initial contact should be with the Chairman, the Clerk or a Councillor. To assist with this, the Chairman, Mrs Margaret Coles, is considering a suggestion that a list of Councillors and their contact numbers should be published and that the Clerk be provided with an e-mailing facility.

Bradworthy Ladies Complete Marathon Walk

As reported in an earlier edition of the Bradworthy News, The Westcountry Wanderers, Caroline Furse and Jacqui Radford have completed their Three Counties coastal path walk in aid of the British Heart Foundation. The Bradworthy girls completed over 100 miles during their five day trek in May, supported along the way by Mandy Andrew, Teena Cann, Sarah Thomas and their families with generous support en route from the Croyde Bay Holiday Village, the Coach and Horses (Horns X) and the Hartland Quay Hotel, arriving at Bude to a very welcoming reception of friends and families on 27th May. The following week Bradworthy turned out in force to celebrate the walk during a fantastic and memorable supper/dance held in the Memorial Hall with over 200 supporters in attendance. It was a great way to crown a gruelling achievement and the Team raised a staggering £4500.00 for the British Heart Foundation. The Team would like to express their sincere thanks to all sponsors, supporters and well-wishers without whom they could not have made this such a great success. Thank you all.

Jacqui Radford

Bradworthy Computer Club

A computer club was formed in Bradworthy in 2000 and for a while flourished as it provided a means of learning and mutual support for club members. The success was largely due to the hard work and enthusiasm of Mike Wade and the contact he made with a Holsworthy computer retailer.

However all good things do not always last and for a number of reasons Club meetings did not recommence after a summer break. Accordingly the last committee called a special general meeting with a view to winding up the club. This took place on 12th May when it was agreed to wind the club up and dispose of the funds held.

The demise of the club has therefore been able to be of benefit to Bradworthy PTA and Playing Field Committee who have or will each shortly receive a cheque for a little over £400.00. As the last appointed Chair of the Club I thank members for their past involvement and in particular Mike for his hard work and commitment.

Twinning

On the weekend of 8th, 9th and 10th July we were visited by a contingent from our twin village of Audrieu, in France. On the Saturday evening we had a most enjoyable evening barn dancing at Sutcombe as the guests of Dave and Fiona Seggons. Chairman Roger Andrews and Shirley Ann provided a very good barbecue.

The following day we went to Castle Drogo and had lunch at a local pub. With one thing and another the French did not see much of the 'Chateau' but expressed an interest in returning to the estate on their next visit. Next year we hope to arrange a visit to Audrieu. For more information, 241119.
