September 2005

Welcome to the September edition of the Bradworthy Newsletter.

The Newsletter is rather late this month as a lightening strike knocked out two of my computers and my fax machine. Thanks entirely to Phil Mayhall of Tamachain Ltd I am now up and running again. When I downloaded my e-mails there was one from a kind contributor who opposed the Turbines. 'How's that for electricity generated by natural forces?'

Each month Phil loads the Newsletter onto the Bradworthy Website. As a consequence, we hear from readers all over the country and, occasionally, from abroad. This month I have printed two enquiries and will be pleased to pass on any response that might arise.

The Carnival Committee would like to thank all those who took part in the skittles tournament and to everyone who took part in the Carnival itself, whether as entrants or spectators. Once again this year there was a very high quality that reflected the time and effort put into preparing floats and costumes. Thank you. Thank you also to the sponsors of this Newsletter that underwrite the high cost of putting the Carnival on each year.

Please hand in any articles for inclusion in next month's Newsletter at the Social Club or send items for inclusion by e-mail to newsletter@bradworthy.co.uk or 'phone/fax 241147.

Thank you

Editor

Bradworthv Carnival

What a wonderful evening the Carnival was last Saturday. The sun shone and a number of people commented on what a good atmosphere there was, including the Bideford youth pipe Band who said that Bradworthy is one of their favorite Carnivals that they attend because they are made very welcome.

The Carnival Committee under the Chairmanship of Nigel Balsdon work hard to put the Carnival on, but all this effort would be wasted if it were not for all those who put so much effort into taking part in the Carnival either on floats or as walkers and to everyone else who turned up to watch the Carnival despite there being a major event at Torrington.

The Carnival Committee are grateful for all the help they get stewarding on the night. Thank you to everyone and we look forward to next year's Carnival which we hope will be even better.

The bucket collection was £521.01. Thank you to all who contributed and all the collectors.

Richard Boughton, Carnival President

Stop Press

In spite of the short notice, the Wine and Wisdom on Saturday 3rd was very well attended. As Jon Barker was not available, Neil Nixon was Questionmaster using his own and Jon's questions. Thank you to them and their 'backstage' team.

Many thanks for the help and support during the August fund raising events, especially the flower festival and the church fete.

The rewiring should be finished any day now. Already the inside is improved and the sense of space in the Church is wonderful now that the pendant lights have been removed. The spiral staircase up the tower is now properly lit, making the ascent much safer.

Outside, the corroded gate light has been replaced and additional fittings to the external corners of the Church now light the pathways through the churchyard which, I am sure, will be greatly appreciated. The quality of Ian Downing's installation received high commendation from the Church Architect.

Internet Enquiry

Mr Richard Ackroyd has e-mailed the Newsletter to say he was at school in Surrey with the youngest son of Harold J Roche (formally Rector of Sutcombe Church). They were at St Johns, Leatherhead, together, from 1978 - 1981. If anyone locally has any contact details for Andrew or his brother please contact the Newsletter for Mr Ackroyd's contact number. Mr Ackroyd would be very pleased to hear from you.

Internet Enquiry

Ms Kathryn Peatey has e-mailed the Newsletter as she has been researching her family history. Her maiden name is Oke. She appears to have connections with a William Oke of Bradworthy, living in Oke's House in the early 1800's. Part of the family moved to Buckinghamshire where Ms Peatey was born. Ms Peatey would very much like to know if Oke's House still exists and if there are any Oke's still living in Bradworthy. Regrettably, I have advised her by reply that a Mr Oke has recently died. If anyone can help, please contact the Newsletter for Ms Peatey's contact details.
