October 2005

Welcome to the October edition of the Bradworthy Newsletter.

On the 7th of this month the Carnival Committee will be holding its AGM. That event marks the second anniversary of the Newsletter. I undertook to edit it for a year and have now done it for nearly two. If anyone would like to take over as Editor, please let me know. I would, again, like to thank our sponsors for their support, and prompt payment this year. Also many thanks to Balsdon's and the Post Office for having the Newsletter on their counters.

Just before the Dog Show, some visitors to a chalet at Berridon went on a rampage and damaged a number of signs, including the direction signs to the Community Wood. As it happened, Holsworthy Police were at Berridon the next day on another inquiry and logged the damage as a matter of routine. So far as I was concerned that was an end of the matter. However the Police contacted the owner of the chalet arid, in due course, we received compensation for the damage to our signs. It is very commendable that the Police Officer dealing with the matter considered it important to ensure that the culprits did not simply get away with it.

There was a good response to last month's email enquiries. The Village Archive run by Mrs Nicholls is well worth a visit. (241202)

Please hand in any articles for inclusion in next month's Newsletter at the Social Club or send items for inclusion by e-mail to newsletter@bradworthy.co.uk or 'phone/ fax 241147.

Bradworthy Parish Council

Licensing Act 2003

Under these new regulations Parish Councils are no longer consulted about licensing matters. Councillors are aware from the Statutory Notice in the local paper that Bradworthy Inn has applied for certain changes and have received some objections. However, Councillors have suggested that individuals should write, direct, to the District Council with their comments. There is a copy of the Statutory Notice which was in the Holsworthy Post on the Parish Notice board giving the details. The deadline for comment is 19th October.

DCC Parish Lengthsmen

The gangs will be in the Parish in November and December. As previously Cllr. Sheila Wright, the Parish Contact, should be informed of any items requiring attention.

Youth Work in Bradworthy

Progress is being made to restart the Youth Club. There have been several offers to serve on a Management Committee and also several have volunteered to help run sessions. Discussions are taking place to find a venue.

Hedge Cutting

The Council thanked those who had responded to the request to cut their roadside hedges.

Proposed Licensable Activity

Opening Hours:Monday to Sunday (inc)10.00am to 2.45am
Licensing Hours:Monday to Sunday (inc)10.00am to 2.00am
Incidental Music:Monday to Sunday (inc)2.00pm to Midnight.

The Licensees have written to the Newsletter to advise the Village of the requested new hours for the Pub. The new law comes into effect on 24th November 2005. To save going backwards and forwards to the Licensing Officers for Extensions for Bank Holidays, Festive Holidays or for Weddings, Functions and Private parties, they have applied for the hours as set out above, every day of the week, every week of the year. They do not intend to keep the pub open this long or this late on a regular basis. Indeed, they do not envisage their trading hours changing much, if at all. It would, however, be nice to be able to have the facility open longer on Friday and Saturday evenings and on occasions, such as the above, should customers wish it to be so.

Saturday 15th 9.00am to 6.00pm Gift Day

It has been a long Bradworthy tradition that every two years the church holds a GIFT DAY when all parishioners are invited to make a contribution towards keeping a resident Rector in the parish.

The Church of England makes a contribution and members of the congregation give so much, but there is always a shortfall.

A more detailed letter should soon be delivered inviting a response. I will be in church from 9.00am until 6.00pm on Saturday, October 15th to receive financial donations towards the upkeep of the church. Coffee and biscuits available during the day. Thank you for any help that you may be able to offer towards keeping the church open.

Sunday 16th 4.00pm Harvest Festival

it has also been a long tradition to thank God for the blessings of a good harvest. Please do feel welcome to come along on October 16th and stay for refreshments in church following the service. Any donations of flowers and produce should be brought along to the church on the morning of Saturday 15th October. Many thanks.

The 3 Pint Cup!

A well supported and successful annual golfing event took place on the 28th August, held at the Hartland Forest Golf Pare. This is a new, but up and coming local golf competition aptly named the '3 Pint Cup'.

It all began last year when a few of us keen amateur golfers wanted to make the best of the Bank Holiday weekend, so got together for a game of golf. As most of you know, golf is a very physical and exhausting sport and after 9 holes a quick 'half tithe' interval was suggested. It was unanimously agreed, (dehydration is a killer for top sports then) and liquid refreshment was taken, before we carried, on through the pain barrier, to complete 18 holes!! A great day was had by all and it was agreed we would play again the following year.

This year 24 keen amateur golfers signed up! We played in small teams of 3 or 4 for team and individual trophies. Everyone enjoyed the day, especially the liquid interval, although some enjoyed that part more than others!

The winning team: Richard Hudson, Paul Furse and Antony Gifford with 78 points.

Nearest the Pin winner: John Barker.

We would like to thank everyone who took part, but special thanks to Norman Williamson who donated the Cup, John Cann who donated the 3 Pint Shield, Julia Barker for all the engraving, Martin the Chef for the use of his mini-bus and providing a fine meal in the evening at the Bradworthy Inn, and Chris Walter and Bett Cann for being the chauffeurs. And finally to the Hartland Forest Golf Pare for providing the venue.

I would also like to thank on a personal note Sue and Eric for babysitting! Most appreciated! Look forward to seeing you all next year!

Coffee morning

On Friday 30th September Bradworthy WI and Chapel members hosted a coffee morning for Macmillan Nurses in the Sunday School Room. It was part of a big fundraising event by Macmillan Cancer Relief called the World's Biggest Coffee Morning. With the Help of plenty of home-baked cakes, a raffle and a bring and buy £305 was raised in less than 2 hours which is a fantastic achievement. Many thanks to all the WI and Chapel members who helped and all those who turned up and chipped in.
