Welcome to the November edition of the Bradworthy Newsletter.
Following last month's editorial, I have received some good input about ideas for future articles and features in the Newsletter. Bradworthy is certainly big enough, in geographical terms, to have a larger and more exciting village News. To do this, however, requires sustained input from village organisations wishing to attract new members, raise funds or just raise awareness of their activities.
In the mean time, once again, I feel I should 'advertise' the Editorship again as we come to the end of the second year of the Newsletter in its current format. If anyone would like to take the Newsletter forward, please do not hesitate to be in touch. I most certainly will not be offended!!
On a personal note, having resolved the vandal damage to my fence last month, this month a local farmer's cows finished the job by stampeding through what was left of the fence. Thank you to those who have enquired as to the cause of the damage and I assure anyone interested that it will be repaired shortly.
Please hand in any articles for inclusion in next month's Newsletter at the Social Club or send items for inclusion by e-mail to newsletter@bradworthy.co.uk or 'phone/ fax 241147.

Progress is being made to restart the Youth Club. Various exploratory meetings have been held & others are planned. Now that the Youth Room in the Memorial Hall is shared with the Social Club Skittle Alley, unless full sole use of the Youth Room can be arranged, a new venue will be needed. The Parish Council, having heard conflicting statements about the Youth Club funds held by the Hall Committee when the previous Youth Club closed, are seeking verification that these funds will be passed over to the new Youth Club to assist with start-up costs.

Cllr. Mrs Sandra Hayes will lay the Parish Poppy Wreath.

The Church Clock
Over the last few months the Church has been undergoing a much needed rewiring and renovation of the lighting and power supply. During the course of that process attention has been focused on to the Church Clock. In response to various questions raised, this article seeks to set out a brief outline of the history of the Clock and how it operates.
The recorded history of the Clock is very sketchy indeed. It seems that the idea for the Clock was originally raised at a meeting of the Square Committee in 1924. At that time, of course, there was still a market at Bradworthy so, one can assume, the Square Committee was influential(?). In any event, a separate committee was formed to progress the idea and they held their meetings, as did the Square Committee, in the Tea Rooms (and paid ten shillings (50p) a year rent to do so). The location, of these Tea Rooms is unknown to this correspondent.
Amongst others, that committee comprised of Commander Corlett (of West Down House?), R L Ashton (formally of Berridon Hall?); Treasurer, J Westerway, Secretary Mr Balsdon and other members Mr Cory, Mr Bromell, Mr Grant, Mr Jennings, Mr Oake, Mr Walter and Mr Wickett. There were others involved both on the committee and not.
During 1924 there were several meetings with a quote for the cost of the installation being agreed at £122/5/5. It seems that the funds for the project were raised locally and fairly quickly although the record implies that not all the funds were yet in place when the Clock was finally ordered. The Committee were obliged to seek a Faculty from the Church to install the Clock on the Church Tower, at a cost of £2 /3/-. They were fortunate, however, in being able to secure a discount of E1/10/- from the clock suppliers. The record is not entirely clear but discussion was still going on about the possibility of saving money by using a cheaper clock face (with white painted numerals) than was ultimately apparently installed. A carpenter was paid £9/-/- to alter the inside of the Tower to accommodate the Clock mechanism and to construct the housing for it. Inside this housing is an inscription: 'Margaret Grant started the Clock in this Tower November 18th 1924'.
The last recorded meeting of the Clock Committee was March 8th 1962 when J E Cann Esq(?) was Chairman. The Parish Council then took over responsibility for the Clock and its maintenance. Over the years it has been repaired and overhauled in 1933, 1949, 1978, when £491.79 was raised by public subscription, and on 5 May 1981. Mr Bob Hudson repainted the face when the scaffolding was round the Tower recently and has maintained the Clock for many years.
