Welcome to the February edition of the Bradworthy Newsletter.
This month's edition is hopelessly late for which I can only apologise. I have nothing to blame other than pressure of other commitments. This is made all the worse by the fact that I have not had to write anything this month other than this editorial! We have received our first of, hopefully, many poems as well as other articles. Many thanks to those contributors.
Following my two articles about the Church Clock, we received a cutting by e-mail about a whether winding up the Church Clock in a small village in Dorset constitutes a proper job. It seems that a local Parish Councillor was carrying out this function for years until someone noticed that it is now illegal for a Councillor to be employed by the Council on which he serves. The twist to this being that he was doing the job on a voluntary, unpaid, basis. It seems that, before sacking him from the post, no-one bothered to ask him for the key to the tower so now the clock has stopped at 3.26pm. The message here, I think, is that so long as I am employed as the Parish Council Winder, I am barred from being a Parish Councillor!!
Please hand in any articles for inclusion in next month's Bradworthy Newsletter at the Social Club or send items for inclusion by e-mail to newsletter@bradworthy.co.uk or 'phone/fax 241147.

Bradworthy Twinning
The Twinning Wine and Wisdom was a great success again this year. As the reigning champion team were unable to attend, a team from Sutcombe were the winners. The Twinning Committee would like to thank everyone who attended, all the helpers and the French Maids who sold the raffle tickets. Particular thanks must go to Jonathan Barker and his team of question setters and markers. Devising an interesting series of a hundred questions is quite a challenge.
The Twinning trip to France is well subscribed this year. For more information on this year's trip and Twinning in general please contact the Chairman at 241119.
Thank you, Editor

Grants to Local Organisations
The grants allocated were:
- Bradworthy Guides £75.00
- Playing Fields Committee £75.00

Crime Prevention
WPC Amanda Brown gave details of the Nominated Neighbours Scheme to help prevent bogus callers gaining entry to residential property. Councillors have details.
Millennium Garden Maintenance
The Council thanked Mrs Angela Yeo & Mr Walter Dayman for their voluntary work since Mrs Yeo set up the project. The Council is now seeking others from the community to carry on this work. Mrs Yeo will be pleased to discuss the maintenance needs with those interested. Out of pocket expenses will be paid.
Church Clock
The Parish Council is responsible for the clock and the Parochial Church Council is considering alterations to the ground floor of the tower. This may involve removing the casing around the weights. There are several options that can be considered; two being a self winding mechanism or electrical clockwork. This will not solve the problem of dampness within the tower affecting the mechanism. The Council is investigating.
Roads
The Council expressed concern about deep roadside ditches with high built up verges noticed in some places locally.
Street Lighting
Several lamps in Langdon Road have been out for a long time. A broken lamp standard is considered dangerous.

The Oke Family
Following our article in the September Newsletter about Ms Peatey's connection with the Oke's of Bradworthy, the Newsletter has heard from Mr (William) Jim Oke of Winnipeg in Canada. His Great Great Great Grandfather was Philip Oke who is buried in the Churchyard with his wife Grace Everson and a daughter Honor Oke. Mr Oke would be pleased to contact any Oke relations to compare notes and hopes to revisit Bradworthy in due course.
Mrs Sheila Wright
Sheila had a big 'O' birthday on 18th January and Bradworthy showed its appreciation on the 22nd in the Social Club. A village wide collection was organised by Judith Birch resulting in the purchase of a very elegant bracelet. A birthday card was made by Tina Cann and signed by dozens of well wishers. The Social Club gave a bouquet of flowers and Shirleyann made a cake. All of this resulted in a Surprise!! presentation in the Social Club.
For those of you who do not know Sheila, she is the Warden for the Sheltered Accommodation in Tucker's Park and is a Parish Councillor. She can be seen at any time busily walking around the village doing or having a chat. Sheila is one of Bradworthy's assets; she is what village life is all about. She is helpful, cheerful and has time for everybody. She has a ready smile, a kindly word and she touches so many people's lives. it would be true to say that she is like meeting a ray of sunshine on a grey day.
Sheila, bless you for being such a great part of Bradworthy. We are all looking forward to celebrating your next big 'O' birthday.

Wind Turbines
It is now a year since the turbines became a part of Bradworthy's landscape. The Newsletter understands that journalists have been asking around for views 'one year on'. Enquiries have also been received by e-mail from students studying alternative energy sources. Any comment would be welcomed.

Fish and chips
The Newsletter is glad, indeed, to record the reopening of the fish and chip shop that is providing a valued service.
Editor
Bradworthy has arrived on the culinary map with the reopening of the fish and chip shop.
We are now fortunate to have a wide selection of food sources; where else in a village of this size can you find so many quality food outlets?
Opposite the fish and chip shop is the Post Office with fresh cut sandwiches and its bake and take. In the square we have Annie's tea room; her bacon butties are a delight. Next door, of course, is the Bradworthy Inn; real ales, log fires and good pub grub. A quick dash across the square to Bob the Butchers; really top quality meat. Don't miss the kebab and burger van on your way to Balsdon's with their selection of fresh baked goodies. Not to forget Shirleyann and her team, tucked away just off the square, for quality outside catering and china hire.
I hereby recommend Bradworthy as a good place to eat?
Eager Ronnie
The Horniwinks
Oh what joy to see
Norman dancing on the tee,
and Junior driving long and wide;
holding back he can't abide.
Have it? Have it! yells Jonty Barks,
he grounds his club and causes sparks.
He lifts his head and is seen frowning,
why can't he ever out drive Downing?
Big Malc steps in and gives it wellie,
quite a feat with that big belly.
Wait up, hang on, we've lost Dorrie
never been known to be in a hurry.
In comes Richie from the Pub,
already in his hand a club;
unlike Lewin who takes his time
to choose between an eight and nine.
Mike the post; steady fellow,
always plays with balls of yellow.
Marks Winter and Wellie and Polhill too
Together with Fursie complete the crew.
So if you are ever on the links
Beware, step aside for the HORNIWINKS!!
