Welcome to the April edition of the Bradworthy Newsletter.
As often happens, on Friday I had hardly anything to put in this month but by Monday I had plenty. In fact, April is quite an active month, of course. Please do not hesitate to send things in, however, because I will have to write something otherwise!
We have another fine poem this month; as space was limited, the last, controversial, verse was omitted but is available by e-mail on application! The winning entry of the WI poem contest does not seem to have arrived, however. I shall have to chase that up! Mr Bradman's article this month also had to be shortened by a paragraph but I hope he will return to his omitted theme in the future.
The skittles season is coming to an end as the evenings get lighter with the Keith Ham Cup on 10th of the month.
Please hand in any articles for inclusion in next month's Bradworthy Newsletter at the Social Club or send items for inclusion by e-mail to newsletter@bradworthy.co.uk or 'phone/fax 241147.

Easter is a great festival for the Christian Church and as an Australian Minister told us just a few weeks ago, we in the northern hemisphere are most fortunate to celebrate Easter in our spring. The message of Easter is one of new hope and new life and what better illustration than the wonderful sights of nature around us as new life unfolds with the lengthening days and warm sun.
Why not join us at 10.00am on Easter Day when Neil Cidlin and the rest of the Worship Group lead our Easter celebration.

North Devon Hospice Walk for Life
Banish the winter blues, abandon the spring cleaning, put your best foot forward and spring into life by joining our Walk for Life? North Devon has some of the most magnificent coastal and countryside walks right on our doorstep and you can explore first hand a variety of plants and appreciate the outstanding scenery. There are 10 magical walks to choose from whatever your age or fitness levels.
The walks will be fun, and will have an expert guide from HM Coastguard who will give you anecdotal stories along the way. The walks will also be incredibly meaningful because every mile we walk we will be helping someone who needs the care and support of the North Devon Hospice.
All participants will be issued with a free "Walk for Life" tee-shirt, sponsored by Torrington Rotary Club, which was designed by Judy Barber, a patient who received hospice care and died earlier this year. You can walk in memory of a loved one, or as a tribute to the work of the Hospice, or just for the love of the beautiful coast and countryside.
Working at the Hospice, it becomes obvious on a daily basis that cancer and other life threatening illnesses are not selective and can effect people from all ages and from all walks of life. This event is for all the family and your friends; lets make it something big and make a big difference for someone else. Come on, Spring into action - your support will make a really positive difference to someone in our local community who relies on hospice care.
For an application form or more information please telephone Emma Lowe at North Devon Hospice 01271 344248
April Fool's Day
April Fool's Day has been and gone and the fairies have been about. Do you remember Ester Ranzen's famous lipra loof at London Zoo that imitated Visitor's every gesture and deposited incredible purple motions? Or the spaghetti trees that had everybody chittering? Both had disappeared by April 2nd! Well, the Public Footpath sign directed through a local kitchen is still there though the plastic cat whoopsie on my chair had a shorter life. We are delighted to have a secret sect to organise a good laugh in the village - but who are the culprits and does anyone know where Inn Bradworthy they meet?
The other recent event was Mothering Sunday when hopefully we spent some time reminding our mothers how much we love them. Breakfast in bed, flowers, chocolates and doing the washing up. For some of us oldies perhaps, a time for silent thoughts and memories. My mum was my best friend. She grumbled a bit but would wade in to support me with all guns blazing if anyone grumbled about me. She would help anyone in trouble without hesitating though she could be relied on to tell them how they should have done things differently. She rolled up her sleeves every Monday to do the weekly wash with the boiler and mangle. On Tuesday she would attack the baking with the same vigour. Oh those rock buns which really lived up to their name and were completely inedible unless tempered with a cup of teal. I would, of course, give anything to have my mum here now; I would even eat one of her buns!
Anyone spotting Mrs Sheila Wright in the village can feel free to call her Granma.

Windmills on mv mind
By Norman Williamson
The brain dead planners at County Hall
elected for and by us all,
Ignore us when they come to power
living in their ivory tower.
All I want is a house for me
it was half as high as the average tree,
But I could not build my home,
it was outside their planning zone.
An old building was already there
couldn't be seen unless you stare.
Perhaps I should put it on a hill
and make it look like a big windmill.
Next time I submit that plan of mine
it will look just like a wind turbine.
If failure is again the outcome
will they also turn down Sutcombe?
