May 2006

Welcome to the May edition of the Bradworthy Newsletter.

This month I have received far more than I can put into one edition.

Interestingly I received an e-mail from a Mrs Shirley Boulton who was evacuated to Bradworthy in 1940 and lived in the village for some years with her mother (Mrs Musitano) and brother. I hope to print her article in full later in the year if space permits. She mentions many local people of her time here and had clearly spent some time reading Mrs Angela Yeo and others' excellent book to be found on the Bradworthy website. Mrs Yeo has often contributed to this Newsletter, of course, and raises the question of recording the ongoing history of the Village in an article this month.

Two "photofeatures" have been submitted this month. Regrettably I have not mastered the technology to print photos yet but will get to it some time. One photo came with an excellent little poem, however. It describes a picture of a boy in an all blue outfit that will be returned to the Doctor's Surgery.

Please hand in any articles for inclusion in next month's Bradworthy Newsletter at the Social Club or send items for inclusion by e-mail to newsletter@bradworthy.co.uk or 'phone/fax 241147.

Thank you

Editor

Bradworthy Parish Council

The Parish Council met on Friday, April 28th. The next meeting is planned for May 19th, one week earlier than usual because of the late May holiday.

Parish Clerk 241313

Annual Parish Meeting

The Parish Council was disappointed and concerned that no parishioners took the opportunity to have their say at this public meeting although several indicated they had matters of importance to raise.

Mr Tim Dingle, Cornwall Countryside Officer gave an informative presentation on the Bude Canal Walks Project and how Bradworthy was linked in with it. Booklets giving details of the walks should eventually be available in Bradworthy shops and in Tourist Information Centres.

In her Annual Report, Chairman Cllr. Mrs Margaret Coles included comments on the Windfarm operation; the housing development adjacent to Ford Crescent - despite local comment that development was about to start, no work can begin until after a public consultation period and consent has been granted; Bradworthy Moor - as owners under S9 of the Commons Registration Act 1965, the Council is looking to have better communication with the Graziers Association; The Playing Field Committee having few members is seeking representatives from appropriate local organisations or individuals interested in keeping the children's play area going; restarting the Youth Club is making progress but needs to retrieve funds from the previous club at present held by the Memorial Hall Committee. Reports from Local Organisations were given by Councillors for the Chapel, Church, Langdon Charity, Playing Field Committee and the Twinning Association. Mrs Shirley Davis sent details of Bradworthy Girl Guides.

At the Council Meeting which followed grant payments, as previously agreed were made to:- CAB, Girl Guides, Pre-School Play Group and Holsworthy Family Workshop.

Planning Applications

Parishioners were reminded that information on forthcoming proposals can be obtained from the District Council, Cllr Trevor Sillifant or the Parish Clerk. Lists are published in the Holsworthy Post. Notices are also displayed at the Application location.

Dear Editor,

Despite the disappointing closure of the Chippy there remains a lingering odour of oil in Lower Village. Does your talented correspondent, A Bradman Esq, have a position on this?

Easter

Easter has come and gone. The excitement of the children anticipating lots of chocolate eggs has turned into a faint feeling of nausea. There were thoughts and prays by many and memories of Easter past by others. Some of us remember the excitement of having perhaps just one chocolate egg which seemed to taste of a dry cocoa mix rather than modern day chocolate but was still eaten with gusto. Brightly coloured hen's eggs were hard boiled for breakfast or perhaps they had been blown and the contents replaced with fruit jelly and served in an egg cup. Our surprise at finding the jelly inside was always tempered by the tell tale blow holes in the ends.

The weather always seemed to be warm and sunny and, except for Easter 1963, when it snowed heavily, Easter weekend seemed traditionally to be a gardening weekend; digging, planting and mowing lawns all with push mowers and hand clippers. Oh those memories of times past. Now we have large Belgian chocolate eggs of the finest quality ample to satisfy the most ardent chocoholics. We have power driven rotovators, mowers, hedge trimmers and strimmers to speed the gardener's work, enabling him to sit indoors out of the weather because, of course, it now always rains on Bank Holidays and not an Easter bonnet in sight.

History of Bradworthy

Calling all those interested in Bradworthy's history and village life.

Martin and Co have kindly marketed the book "Bradworthy in the Twentieth Century" for the authors for some time and now the final few copies remain for you to purchase at the nominal price of £12.00 per copy.

All proceeds have been donated to organisations or charities favoured by the authors, eg the Church, Chapel, Cancer Care and Chestnut Appeal. The final charity to benefit will be the Breathe Easy clinic at NDDH.

I know that many of you have attended this clinic to improve your lung function and I thought it would be the most appropriate for this final donation as I am the sole author remaining although, Phil Mayhall, the producer of the book, is still busy on his computer in Lower Village. Thank you Phil for all the time and effort you gave with us, the authors, to bring this book to fruition.

I do not need to remind you all that there is still much to be recorded about our village and more photographic material out there. So who will be our next budding author? You?

Mrs Angela Yeo
