June 2006

Welcome to the June edition of the Bradworthy Newsletter.

The "Visitor Season" seems to have started later this year than in recent years but last month saw a marked increase in demand for the Newsletter. There has been a drop in input this month, however, no doubt because we are all outside enjoying the good weather.

The Parish Council notes that are printed in the Newsletter are actually written by the Parish Clerk. As a matter of courtesy to me, however, he also includes a copy of the actual minutes of the meeting for background information. It is interesting that the Council have considered again setting up a Parish Council Website. There have been various discussions about this in the past, I understand. Once such a website is up and running I have no doubt parishioners would be better informed particularly about planning matters and local government issues generally. I recall that the domain name was registered some time ago so perhaps it is not such an unattainable ambition.

In the mean time I continue to receive e-mails from visitors to and friends of the village, past and present, seeking information about the village and its residents. I actually received one the other day asking about Jill and Tony Dilnot and their written works as published by this Newsletter which was distinctly odd!! However all enquiries are always welcome from whatever source as are all contributions, please.

Please hand in any articles for inclusion in next month's Bradworthy Newsletter at the Social Club or send items for inclusion by e-mail to newsletter@bradworthy.co.uk or 'phone/fax 241147.

Thank you

Community Wood

Local dog walkers and nature lovers will be pleased to hear that our Community Wood at Berridon recently won an award in the 2005 Devon Woodland Competition. It took first prize in the class 2 for a woodland area of over one hectare between 5 and 10 years old.

"A seven year old community woodland comprising of plantings of mixed broadleaves and conifers in pure species blocks. The woodland is well established. The judges were particularly impressed by the rate of growth and uniformity and colour of the Sitka Spruce within compartment 1."

I am pleased to see the wood is always being used when ever I go into Brad.

Bradworthy Twinning

Regrettably my wife and I could not go on the Twinning trip this year but I understand it was a great success.

The coach was full and so those participating enjoyed a discount on the the cost of the trip. Even so, I understand a surplus was made on the overall budget to help towards entertaining the visitors from Audrieu next year.

It is always difficult to think up a suitable gift each year that will be original and worthwhile. The French Twinners have been remarkably generous over the years to the Bradworthy twinners by contributing a section of the garden next to the Marie (Mayor's Office) that they call Bradworthy Square. Over the years the Bradworthy Twinners have presented various items for it, including a sundial last year.

The Bank Holiday Monday is a normal working day in France and so the Twinners took a coach trip around some of the local sights and a stop at the Hypermarket before heading back to the ferry. The coach returned to Bradworthy at 2.30 in the morning of the Tuesday.

The Chairman and the Twinners would like to thank their French hosts, some of whom read the Newsletter, and look forward to seeing them all again next year.

London Marathon

Gavin Johns would like to thank everyone who kindly sponsored him for competing in this year's London Marathon.

£1,290.50 was raised which has now been passed onto Children's Hospice South West.

Happy Memories of Bradworthy

I came across your village website quite by chance and have spent two hours being transported back through the years to my childhood.

I recognise quite a number of people from the old photographs and of course the local names, so familiar, are still there even if some are several generations later. I was particularly interested to see the photograph of Mrs Fraser, who was my godmother when I was baptised in the church when I was 9 yrs old.

On being evacuated to Bradworthy in 1940 at then almost 6 yrs of age, we set up home in Waterland Mill. Although lacking all the usual facilities one would expect in a home today, life for us was free as air and we roamed the countryside without fear. Later we moved up into the village and again no mains water, electricity or main drainage. How my 32yr old London bred mother coped I never cease to wonder. It stood her in good stead though as she died only two years ago at the great age of 96.

We collected all our drinking water from the village pump and some may well remember the very large "kettle" that we used for this purpose. It was also used in the scene of the Mad Hatter's tea party when the school under the direction of Mrs Worthy, performed Alice in Wonderland.

With my brother I attended the village school when the headmaster was Mr Thomas and later Mrs Worthy became headmistress. Miss Chubb and Miss Roberts were the other two teachers.

I well remember the celebrations at the end of WW2 and the bonfire on the Moor plus fireworks bought from Martin's shop.

I am sure there must be someone still living that will remember mother, she was known as Musey and for some years was the local hairdresser. She was at one time quite an active member of WI and I think was secretary when Winnie Colliver was Carnival Queen as I remember her being involved with the making of the crown and the searching for beads to decorate it.

Now that I have found it, I shall hopefully keep up to date with what's going on in Bradworthy. It sounds a very nice place to live.
